Autumn Gold – Oct. 2-4, 2009

leavesEllsworth UMC will have a table set up down by the waterfront for Ellsworth’s Annual Autumn Gold celebration on Saturday, October 3rd from 10:30-2:00.

This year the mission that we are raising funds for is Nothing But Nets – http://www.nothingbutnets.com

Nothing But Nets: Send a net, save a lifeNothing But Nets distributes mosquito netting to refugees and others in need in countries that are plagued with malaria. One net (for $10) will cover 3 children at night, and has the potential to save many lives.

Visit the Nothing But Nets website to find out more about the program, and how you can help.

At our table, we’ll have a fish pond (that suspiciously resembles a dry wading pool) for kids to “catch” fish in and then they can put the fish they catch in our net.  Catch 3 fish for $.50. Moms and dads can also put a fish in the net with any donation of their own. And while you’re there, pick up a free mosquito repellent wipe!

S how can you help locally?

1) Come to our table on the waterfront on October 3rd between 10:30-2:00
2) Leave a donation in the collection plate some Sunday (service starts at 11:00)
3) Spread the word about Nothing But Nets to your friends and family; post about it on your Facebook page; write about it in your blog; tell co-workers about it; the list is endless.

Contact Amy Briggs at 266-4347 or nightingale70@gmail.com for more information.

A-MAZE-ing Fall Field Trip – Oct. 4th

corn-mazeJoin us on Sunday, October 4th after worship as we travel to Treworgy Orchards in Levant.

Treworgy is famous for their pumpkins, their apples, but most of all for their incredibly creative CORN MAZES!

This year’s maze is shaped like a butterfly (see image at left).

Entrance to the maze is $5 – and that includes an ice cream cone!

If you’d like to come, meet outside the church at 1:00PM on Sunday, Oct. 4th. Bring your own vehicle, or carpool with one of us. The more, the merrier!

We plan on stopping somewhere in Bangor for dinner after we finish the maze.

Benefit for Dolly Fisher Fund-First Congregational Church, Blue Hill

From our friends at First Congregational Church of Blue Hill:

Dear friends,
Summer is great but winter is coming.  As many of you know, we provide several thousand dollars for emergency fuel, food and utilities each year through the Dolly Fisher Fund.  We just this minute prevented an electrical service disconnect for a single mother in Sedgwick, and we offer this kind of help for scores of households throughout the year.
That is why I hope you can come hear the beautiful, high-powered folk and traditional music of our friends Willy and Brian Claflin this Saturday the 25th at 7:30 in our sanctuary (see map and directions to First Congo Church in Blue Hill below).  They are donating every penny of proceeds to Dolly Fisher.  Suggested donation is $15.  If you can’t make it, please consider sending a donation instead to:
First Congregational Church
POB 444
Blue Hill 04614
Memo: Dolly Fisher Fund
We hope that you can make the concert – it sounds like a great evening.  For more information, contact Pastor Rob McCall at 207-374-2892 or email info@bluehillcongochurch.org

Outdoor Service & Cookout – July 19th

baby-and-cornOn Sunday, July 19th, we’ll be worshiping “outside the box” – actually, “outside the building” – on either the side lawn (depending on the sogginess factor) or the parking lot of Ellsworth UMC on Hancock Street.

Following the service, we’ll be having a cookout, with all the requisite summertime foods – burgers, dogs, chips, salads, etc. Feel free to bring a favorite dish or dessert to share, but we’ll probably have plenty.

All are welcome to attend, whether you come to the service beforehand or not! Our service starts at 11:00; the cookout should start around 12:30.

In case of rain, we’ll still have lunch, it’ll just be inside.

For more information, call Pastor Susan at 374-3536 or email nightingale70@gmail.com

Hope to see you there!

GPYes! Services to Start June 15th

GPYes-Logo-smGP

The Ellsworth United Methodist Church invites area residents and visitors to its new, Monday evening worship service.

The first of these weekly services––called GPYes! Navigating Our Lives With God––will be held from 7:00-7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, in Fellowship Hall at the church at 21 Hancock St. After that, GPYes! starts at 6:30 each week.

This kickoff service will follow the first of the church’s free “Manna Monday” suppers, regularly scheduled for the third Monday of each month as part of the GPYes! experience.

Any and all are welcome to this free meal at 6:30 p.m. on June 15, which will be a spaghetti feast, with pasta and sauce, bread, salad, and make-your-own sundaes.

What is “GPYes!”?
The new, weekly GPYes! services are intended for those who can’t make Sunday morning worship or don’t feel comfortable in a traditional worship setting. The “GP” stands for “God’s Power”, and the services will have a GPS-based map/navigation theme, sharing God’s message and personal stories as participants “navigate” their lives with God.

What happens at a GPYes! service?
Music. Munchies. Movies. Message. Mission.

All of these things will be found at a GPYes! service. The space in Fellowship Hall is safe and informal––couches, chairs, coffee tables––and so is the atmosphere. Guests will listen to and sing contemporary praise and worship songs, discussing the lyrics in a Christian context; play music and share talents through guest musicians and occasional open mic nights; watch relevant movies and discover bits of God’s message; work on existing mission projects, local and global, and come up with new ones.

What if I’d like a traditional service, just not on Sunday mornings?
To accommodate those who want a more formal experience but can’t attend Sunday morning, the GPYes! service on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. will be a traditional blended service identical to Sunday’s worship.

For more information about GPYes! or directions to the church, please contact Pastor Susan Yaruta-Young at 374-3536 or Amy Briggs at 266-4347.
