Human Relations Day – Jan 16, 2011

Human Relations Day is one of the opportunities for United Methodist Churches to celebrate our connectional work. This day of social action and raising awareness aims to heal social ills at the national level. It supports Community Developers, United Methodist Voluntary Service (UMVS), and the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. The first two programs are administered through the General Board of Global Ministries.

In The United Methodist Church calendar, Human Relations Day happens the Sunday immediately following the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. However, you can observe Human Relations Day at anytime of the year. To give online click here. The juxtaposition of these two very special days is not a coincidence. The United Methodist Book of Discipline describes the purpose of Human Relations Day as a call to “the Church to recognize the right of all God’s children in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with each other.”

Penobscot UMC Melds Music and Mission

In a recent article in the Bangor Daily News, Penobscot United Methodist – our sister church – got some nods for its monthly “Music Buffet Coffee House” program. These informal open mic nights serve the community in many ways – by providing a fun and entertaining night out in an area where there’s admittedly not a lot to do – but most notably by providing heating assistance to those in need.

Read the full article to learn more.

If you’re a performer who would like to participate in an upcoming coffee house, please contact Pastor Susan Yaruta-Young at 374-3536.

Outdoor sanctuary is shaping up!

At one of our GPYes! Monday night gatherings a couple of weeks ago, some hard-working gardeners put their skills to work and planted some beautiful flowers around the bench and birch cross in our outdoor sanctuary. Our roving photographer, Z, caught some action shots of the evening’s planting.

Susan surveys the job site.

Filling the pot with good, fertile soil.

Nancy approves of Susan's work.

The fruit of their labors.

More flowers? Of course!

John, getting creative. Love that gardening stool!

Our church, with our outdoor sanctuary to the left - before flowers.

We hope that many will come and take advantage of this quiet space to reflect and pray enjoy the bright colors and sweet smells. And the flowers are just a start – there’s been talk of wiring up some speakers so folks can enjoy some contemplative sounds while they meditate. What about you? What would make this space special for you?  We’d love to hear your ideas! Post them as a comment below or email young@midmaine.com and share them with Pastor Sue.

Peace and flower petals,

-Amy B.
