Summer Contemporary Worship Services

Ellsworth United Methodist Church is offering a “dress down” contemporary worship series on four Monday nights this summer, July 11, 18, 25, and August 1, beginning with a shared meal at 6:30. These worship times together will be filled with music, story telling and times for silence and prayer.

Location: beside the church in our outside sanctuary (raining/stormy weather: inside Fellowship Hall).

What to expect?  6:30 a meal together. 7:15 modern contemporary music, a story, reflections, stories, moments of silence, prayer and much more music. Fellowship. Offering? Not needed but if you would like, please bring a non-perishable food item or personal care item, especially new socks for all ages. Your offering will be donated to local shelters and food pantries.

Most importantly: we want to meet you. And there are “no strings attached.”  Why? Because our history tells us God, Jesus, many great saints and prophets, as well as our own leader, John Wesley, went where the people were. Leaving our church building, moving to the grassy lawn, is just one way we are attempting to be closer to people living in our community. No walls, no shut doors. If weather is bad and we must go inside, our doors will remain open.

Will you come and meet us? We hope so.

GPYes! Services to Start June 15th

The Ellsworth United Methodist Church invites area residents and visitors to its new, Monday evening worship service.

The first of these weekly services––called GPYes! Navigating Our Lives With God––will be held from 7:00-7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, in Fellowship Hall at the church at 21 Hancock St. After that, GPYes! starts at 6:30 each week.

This kickoff service will follow the first of the church’s free “Manna Monday” suppers, regularly scheduled for the third Monday of each month as part of the GPYes! experience.

Any and all are welcome to this free meal at 6:30 p.m. on June 15, which will be a spaghetti feast, with pasta and sauce, bread, salad, and make-your-own sundaes.

What is “GPYes!”?
The new, weekly GPYes! services are intended for those who can’t make Sunday morning worship or don’t feel comfortable in a traditional worship setting. The “GP” stands for “God’s Power”, and the services will have a GPS-based map/navigation theme, sharing God’s message and personal stories as participants “navigate” their lives with God.

What happens at a GPYes! service?
Music. Munchies. Movies. Message. Mission.

All of these things will be found at a GPYes! service. The space in Fellowship Hall is safe and informal––couches, chairs, coffee tables––and so is the atmosphere. Guests will listen to and sing contemporary praise and worship songs, discussing the lyrics in a Christian context; play music and share talents through guest musicians and occasional open mic nights; watch relevant movies and discover bits of God’s message; work on existing mission projects, local and global, and come up with new ones.

What if I’d like a traditional service, just not on Sunday mornings?
To accommodate those who want a more formal experience but can’t attend Sunday morning, the GPYes! service on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. will be a traditional blended service identical to Sunday’s worship.

For more information about GPYes! or directions to the church, please contact Pastor Susan Yaruta-Young at 374-3536 or Amy Briggs at 266-4347.

Ideas for alternative services?

Because we realize that not everyone is able to make a Sunday 11:00AM service, or that not everyone is comfortable in that environment – or heck, that there are tons of people that are totally BORED just mentioning church – we’re toying with the idea of offering get-togethers (not necessarily “worship services) at a different time, with a different focus than a traditional service.

So I turn to you, loyal readers (or random folks that just happen to stumble upon us on the internet), for some ideas.

Would a more contemporary, non-traditional service appeal to you?
If so, what kinds of things would you like to do or see there? Wii night? A free supper followed by movies? A time to share what’s going on in your life with others and possibly find support/ideas/suggestions to help? Contemporary music? Live music performances? Open mic nights? More food?

We’re open to suggestions – please bring ‘em on! We’re hoping to start something in June or earlier.

All the best,
Amy B.
