EUMC eNews – February 1, 2009

Here’s what’s going on in the next few weeks at Ellsworth United Methodist Church:

Church Website Now Up and Running
As of this week, you can now give your friends and family an easy-to-remember web address for this website – www.ellsworthumc.org

That URL/link will take them right here, where they can keep up on all the goings-on in the church. If they use RSS feeds, they can subscribe and get an email every time something is posted. It’s a great way to stay connected with folks that are far away!

So tell your friends, put it in your bookmarks, place it in your email signature, but get the word out – the place to be is www.ellsworthumc.org!

Eggs and Exchange Breakfast – Sunday, Feb. 15 –  9:30-10:00
Join us in the fellowship hall for coffee and yummy breakfast fare as Judy Bragg speaks on UM missions that New England conference churches are asked to support.

Boy Scout Sunday – Sunday, Feb. 8
A little information about “Scout Sunday”

The Boy Scouts of America celebrate annually in the month of February the Anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scout program by Lord Baden Powell in England. Scout Sunday was added to the scout celebration around the middle 1940s. Scouting’s anniversary is celebrated on February 8. Scout Sunday is always the Sunday preceding the 8th, unless the 8th is a Sunday, in which case the 8th would be Scout Sunday. The Saturday following February 8th is Scout Sabbath. Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in church aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out parts of what is pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a “Scout is Reverent” and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their “Duty to God”. These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith.

Join us as we celebrate our scouts on Feb. 8th.

Annual Bowl-A-Thon – Saturday, Feb. 7 – 3:30 Eastward Lanes/Dinner at 5:00 at Pat’s Pizza
This is one of our major fundraisers for the year. Come have some fun and raise some money to support the various missions that EUMC participates in. We take pledges (either a set amount per pin each bowler knocks down or a flat donation amount) and bowl two games. Then we go have pizza together at Pat’s! If you don’t want to bowl, we’d love to have you there as a cheerleader!  Bowling costs about $3.25 per game, and shoe rental is $1. Of course, for those professionals out there, bring your own if you’ve got ’em!

Defender of the Handicapped – RIP: Patrick Carleton Harris

"Quadriplegics Can Do" by Patrick Carleton Harris

Ellsworth United Methodist Church sadly learned today that Patrick Harris, our courageous and tenacious friend in Christ, passed away on September 11 of this year in Augusta. We know now that he is skydiving, scuba diving, para sailing, and hiking to his heart’s content, whole once more, in his body, soul and mind.

Read Patrick’s full obituary here.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Patrick’s family and loved ones.

Luther Young, husband of EUMC Pastor Susan Young, and science writer for The Jackson Laboratory, recently completed a human interest story on Patrick for the Bangor Daily News. Published on January 5, 2009, the piece tells the story of a Bar Harbor man who has been many things – social worker, equestrian, skydiver, teacher – and, since 2001, a quadriplegic.

Read Luther’s story

Patrick first came to our attention in the fall of 2008, when he called, requesting that Communion be brought to him at his home in Bar Harbor. Susan and Luther went and met him, and were instantly drawn to this strong, but for all intents and purposes, broken man. In the last few months, Luther has developed a rapport with Patrick, spending time interviewing him and his stepfather for the BDN piece, visiting him at his apartment or in the hospital, quietly talking or singing to him, or just being there. In every interaction, Patrick’s strength of character, sense of humor and will have shown through, though both have been severely tested in the past few years.

Patrick has written and self-published a book entitled “Quadriplegics Can Do”  The book is $19.95 and is available:

  • Online at amazon.com
  • By mail by emailing Amy Briggs, music director and web master for Ellsworth United Methodist Church
  • By picking one up some Sunday at the Ellsworth United Methodist Church on Hancock Street in Ellsworth. Doors are open from 9:30-12:30 every Sunday.

We may be small…

…but we’re mighty!

Welcome to the Ellsworth United Methodist Church’s online presence.  We hope to use this space to post information about upcoming events at our church, semi-regular e-newsletters, blog posts from our pastor and other church leaders, pre-recorded sermons and more. The possibilities are endless, and we hope to hear from people on what they’d like to see here.

Please have a look at some of the other pages – like About Us (to see exactly who we are and what we do), Upcoming Events (to find out what’s going on at the church), and Contact Us (to see how to get in touch).

We also have a presence on Facebook

However you found us, we hope you’ll take a moment to read about us, post a comment, idea or question, and come back again soon.

If you have any problems with this site, please contact the EUMC web master Amy Briggs.
